Nature of the campaign
PRIORITY CRITERIA

In case the available ship time is insufficient to accommodate all requests a prioritization will be implemented based on the following criteria. Your motivation for each of these criteria should allow evaluation and a ranking of your request. Requests for research assignments will receive a higher weight than requests for monitoring or educational campaigns.

Scientific valorisation

Show that samples and observations made onboard have previously scientifically been valorized.

  • Supply a list with publications that acknowledge RV Simon Stevin
  • Supply a list of data or metadata that have been submitted to the Flanders Marine Data Centre
  • Media coverage
  • Describe potential scientific valorization for recent projects

Innovation

Describe the innovative character of the request, both on a scientific or methodological level, eg, the use of a novel/new instrument.

Data Series

Does the request entail a continuation of (longterm) data series or monitoring? Supply the importance on scientific or policy level.

Technical and operational feasibility

Describe all aspects that are of importance tot he planning, mobilization and execution of the campaign

Cooperation and integration

Indicate the cooperation with other research teams and/or the eventual integration of the campaign in cooperative projects or initiatives with regard to research infrastructures, both nationally and internationally

Scientific track record

Supply a list of recent publications (past 5 years) of the requesting scientist or research team (not necessarily marine related).

SAMPLING METHOD

The following equipment will always be present on board the Simon Stevin. There is no need to request these:

Lab equipment:

  • Fridge & Deepfreezer (-30°C)
  • Drying oven
  • RiOs – MilliQ water purification system
  • Fume hood
  • Filtration unit: vacuum pump + vacuum flask + manifold holding three 500ml filtration-units for 47mm filters

Sampling equipment:

  • CTD SBE19: salinity/temperature/depth profiler + OBS (turbidity measurement) + O2 probe + PAR sensor & Niskin carrousel (6*4 Liter)
  • SBE 21 thermosalinograph: underway temperature/salinity + fluorometer + OBS + O2 probe

Requests for the VLIZ robotics will be evaluated on their feasibility in a separate trajectory with the VLIZ Marine Robotics Centre.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

The requester will

  • Respect all safety instructions on board the RV Simon Stevin;
  • Ensure that all participants to the campaign will strictly adopt the code of conduct for performing scientific research onboard

  • Use and deploy the scientific instruments on board in a proper fashion and with care.;
  • Supply metadata and (when possible) data collected during the campaign to the Flanders Marine Datacenter of VLIZ;
  • Refer to the use of the VLIZ scientific dive team in any publication reporting on the research performed using scientific diving
  • Refer to the use of the VLIZ autonomous/robotic systems in any publication reporting on the research performed using this infrastructure
  • Refer to the use of the RV Simon Stevin in any publication reporting on the research performed onboard, by using this reference:
    “The crew of RV Simon Stevin and DAB Vloot are acknowledged for their support in performing the research at sea.”
