WoRMS Top Ten Marine Species 2025 Nomination Form

The aim of the WoRMS Top Ten Marine Species is to highlight the fascinating discoveries of the numerous new marine species being made every year, to the wider public. Like every year we plan to release the WoRMS Top Ten Marine Species of 2025 to coincide with World Taxonomist Appreciation Day - March 19th.

Please ensure that the species you nominate is a marine species and is published in 2025 (validly published between 01/01/2025 and 31/12/2025). Both recent and fossil species can be nominated.

If you want to nominate several species, please fill in the nomination form for each species separately.

Please write the full name and authority of the species.

Please provide us with information/a story explaining why your species should be chosen. Strong candidates will have a compelling story behind the description, e.g. rare or unusual morphology, an interesting name, importance to society e.g for conservation/ medical importance/ toxic/ dangerous. Please do include links to other media about the species if these are available.

Is the name validly published (i.e. does the name meet the specific criteria set by the relevant code of nomenclature?)
Is the name in WoRMS?

If the name is not in WoRMS yet, no action is needed from your side. You can continue with your nomination and we will contact the relevant editor to add the name to WoRMS.

Contact information

Are you the author of the species?

We need the name of the author(s) of the species for press-related purposes. This information will be displayed on the WoRMS Top Ten 2025 webpage (see e.g. previous edition), should your nominated species make it to the Top Ten 2025.
